Port of Wilmington (ILM)

Ramar's home port — MOTSU direct adjacency, Cape Fear corridor, Class 1 specialist

port brief

Wilmington is Ramar's home port and the operational center of every other service we run. Ramar's yard is approximately 7 miles from the Port of Wilmington gates, making same-day, same-shift drayage the operational default. The port itself is the larger of NCSPA's two state ports — primarily a containerized commercial port with significant breakbulk and forest-products volume — and it is unique on the U.S. East Coast for one operational reason: it is the only commercial port directly adjacent to MOTSU.

MOTSU (Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point) is the U.S. Army's sole ocean port for ammunition export. Class 1.1 export freight that originates anywhere in CONUS can transit through MOTSU under defined staging windows, with commercial drayage handling the in-CONUS legs. Ramar's SDVOSB credentials, MOTSU coordination familiarity, and 30-plus-year operating record make us the practical commercial drayage partner for MOTSU-bound freight.

Wilmington also serves the broader commercial market: forest products (a top-five commodity at ILM), automotive parts, project cargo, and other containerized hazmat freight through the Carolinas.

Wilmington — Frequently Asked

What is Ramar's relationship with MOTSU?
Ramar has 30-plus years of operational familiarity with MOTSU coordination from our home base 7 miles away. We hold the routing approvals and security protocols required for Class 1 movements between ILM and MOTSU staging windows.
How quickly can Ramar dispatch drayage at ILM?
From the Ramar yard, drayage to ILM gates dispatches within 90 minutes during business hours. Off-hours requests for placarded loads require a 24-hour pre-coordination window.
Does Wilmington handle commercial Class 1 freight?
Yes. The Port of Wilmington handles commercial Class 1.1 and 1.4 freight under standard hazmat protocols. For DOD-grade Class 1 export, MOTSU adjacency provides routing options no other commercial East Coast port has.
What about FTZ access?
Wilmington is covered by FTZ #66. Bonded drayage to FTZ-eligible warehouses inside the zone defers customs duties on imported imported commercial freight.
